Spring is well on its way, here in the Pacific Northwest,
and it's past time for me to work off the "Winter Weight Gain" which
plagues me every year. This year, however, I will have more than my own health
and welfare in mind. I am in training to participate in an endurance event as a
member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. I have committed to ride my bicycle in
a "Century Ride" (100 miles) in "America's Most Beautiful Bike
Ride" at Lake Tahoe on June 4th AND to raising $5000 to benefit the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Since TNT's inception in 1988, over 150,000 participants have raised
over $350 million for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
I'm
writing to you to ask for your support and encouragement and because I need
your help raising the money I've committed to. Because of extensive investment
in research, the leukemia death rate for children 0-14 years of age in the
United States has declined 60 percent over the past three decades. The survival
rate for children under 5 diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia is now just
over 88%.
Team Honoree I'm riding, too,
for our honored teammate, 14 year-old Alexander Barr. Alexander was diagnosed when he was five years old, and his
journey in that first year was harder than any 100-mile bike ride, marathon or
triathlon ever imagined. His chemotherapy continued from 1997 until 2000, and
though he still has to have every ailment carefully checked, he has not had a
cancer relapse and has more time to live a normal life.
